On
Friday 21st December
I went to a superb concert of 'Christmas Music by Candlelight' given
by the renowned Ex Cathedra choir @ St Paul’s Church,
Birmingham city centre - yet another springboard into the Christmas
festivities ..

Festival
of Nine Lessons & Carols
at St Thomas's in Stourbridge on Sunday evening 16th December - I
took this YouTube video .. sadly the Choir's singing is somewhat
diluted by the congregation in this 58 second clip but we were
invited to join in!! The church was totally candle-lit which played
havoc with my camera's light settings as you'll see ... view it

From
the football this afternoon, 1st December, I left, seamlessly,
within 50 minutes of getting home to go hear the local choir ‘Colla
Voce’ sing Handel’s Messiah at Christ Church. It was a superb
performance – how eclectic am I? - and a good (traditional) start to
Christmas! Advent starts tomorrow.

Yes,
I KNOW I’m living in la-la-land if I think we can keep this going but
for now I’ll settle for the fact Albion is 3rd in the table .. my

I
was a talk Thursday 25th October on ‘Cradley before Anglo-Saxon
Times’ that featured small finds that have been made in Cradley from
the Stone Age to Romano-British times. Interesting to think that circa
8000 bc nomadic Mesolithic communities camped on our hills (oh how
intelligent that last sentence makes me sound!!).. More photos here |

off BBC Midlands 8th October, the photo shows the Baggies had 11

rockin’ & rollin’ .. |

Almost
famous! While finishing off our Birmingham-Worcester canal walk 4th
October (walking the last segment from Droitwich to Worcester) in
the middle of nowhere we stumbled across news teams from the BBC & ITV
interviewing on the tow-path members of the Environment Agency about the
recently discovered shrimps from Eastern Europe which are destroying the
indigenous ecology of the rivers!! You may have seen the reports that
did appear on TV. Oh, and we walked a total of 12.06 miles [accuracy
courtesy of my iPhone walking app!!!] way more than our norm. Exhausted
is an understatement!. See

5-day break in Amsterdam with Joy & Lynton and Lynne & Ian, staying
in an apartment

Keizersgracht

Like most of the old buildings alongside the

bedroom, affording superb views of the city. See the photos taken

I
went with Belinda, Shirley & Paul to
watch Team GB play South Korea in the men's Olympic football at
the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. My first time at that stadium
and it being an Olympic was quite unlike any 'normal' football game. We
lost on penalties, but hey we always seem to!! A late night back @
2,30am but a good time out!! My third and final Olympics event. More photos

My
second time out this week to go to an Olympic event, this time going to

watching live action on the big screens! We saw two Team GB gain
two gold medals - the crowd made it a really exciting day. More photos

A
good day yesterday in London for the Jubilee river pageant – pity
the weather didn’t behave as well as the crowd who were amazing (not
quite sure why I was surprised at the spread of ages & ethnicities of
everyone near me who were enthusiastically joining in, but I was) and we
had a group of people who belonged to a choir near us who kept us
entertained throughout. A lovely [but damp!!] atmosphere. I was near
Vauxhall Bridge just down from the MI6 building – shhh I didn’t tell you
that! More photos here |

A
swelteringly hot day, so how typical it was the day we had planned
to do an 11 mile walk in the depths of Warwickshire [my GPS app clocked
it at 10.82 miles but who's counting!!] but when the heat is coupled
with the wrong boots and the consequent blisters it was a long, long
walk indeed. Not helped by the fact that when we finally staggered to
the rail station [in the middle of nowhere!!] to come home the trains
were only every hour - a 40 minute wait ensured!! Was I glad to step
into a cool shower when I got home!! More photos

People who had previously failed in
their bid to secure Olympics tickets
had from 1100 Thursday 17th May to try
again in a first come first served
online sale, before the remaining
tickets go on general release on 23/5. I
have, at last, Olympics tickets .. or
perhaps that should be Olympics-Lite!!
Having seen the ‘available’ list of
tickets included the closing ceremony I
thought I’d give it a go .. sa...dly
the only ones left were £2.5k each!! So
next choice was basketball – my one and
only ever basketball game was when I
took my nephew to the NEC some 13+ years
ago – which were available at a more
reasonable £45. Having pressed the ‘buy’
button I was then put in a queue for 15
minutes after which the screen told me
“no longer available.” After 2 more
similarly abortive attempts for diving
and volleyball I managed to get tickets
for entrance to the Olympic Park which
allow spectators to wonder around the
grounds, soak up the atmosphere & watch
the action on big screens but sadly not
to enter venues. Better than nothing I
suppose .. and on the plus side they’re
only £10 .. !!

Walking
part of the National Cycle Route 45, the Mercian Way, in the Wyre
Forest
on Thursday 3rd May 2012.
The path
is so named because it passes through what was once the ancient
Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia. To reflect its name a number of
waymarkers depicting Saxon warriors were commissioned and have been
placed along the route.

I
went to the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on Friday 23rd March because
as
part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, 10 drawings by
Leonardo da Vinci from the Royal Collection are being exhibited in five

A
good, long day out in London on Thursday 26th January, primarily to
visit the Leonardo da Vinci Exhibition at the National Gallery
(its websites says "the most complete display of Leonardo’s
rare surviving paintings ever held. This unprecedented exhibition – the
first of its kind anywhere in the world – brings together sensational
international loans never before seen in the UK."
I also did the usual 'touristy' bits and ended up for over an hour
in the Commons, listening to a debate of the Strategic Defence Review
[my sort of topic!!] but had to leave early evening to catch my train.

For
members of the SNP intent on breaking up the UK I would, on Burns Night
today [25th January] repeat here his poem 'The Dumfries Volunteers':
"O let us not, like snarling curs,
In wrangling be divided,
Till, slap! come in an unco loun,
And wi’ a rung decide it!
Be Britain still to Britain true,
Amang ourselves united;
For never but by British hands
Shall British wrangs be righted |

A
lucky escape for my niece Amie,
her boyfriend Tom & my
great-nephew Archie [aged
2] last Saturday, 21st January,
when, at no fault of Tom as
driver, his car was involved
in a bad accident causing it
to roll over 4 times, ending up
on its roof. Luckily all were
properly strapped in and escaped
serious injury – though Tom did
break his wrist!! The only
window not shattered was that
next to Archie’s seat so he was
protected from flying glass. As
you can see, the roof did cave
in over the driver’s seat but
luckily Tom had been thrown
sideways … other photos

I
went with Stephen Bradley to watch the 3pm kick off of my beloved WBA
v Norwich at the Hawthorns on Saturday 14th January 2012. A good
game with the baggies having the vast majority of play - sadly Norwich
beat us 1-2 .. they seemed to have only three attempts at goal and
scored on two of them!! Our goal came from a penalty which I took on my
mobile and it can be seen on YouTube

It
was ‘sore feet day’ for me today, 12th January, walking for just
over 4 hours, which is a bit longer than the norm!! We walked from home
to Saltwells Park, Netherton canal, merry Hill's Waterfront and back
home via Lye & Windmill Hill. More
